Youth National Championships 2018
We had two athletes qualify for this year's Youth National Championships. Brookelynn Buerkley, a 58k athlete, competing in the 16-17 yr. category and Taylor Grebe, a 69k athlete, also competing in the 16-17 yr. category.
Brookelynn is a remote athlete from Montana. She joined the team after coaches Maria and Mychael held an olympic weightlifting seminar at a nearby CrossFit gym. After about 6 months of training remotely, Brookelynn made the trip down to Colorado Springs, CO to compete in the Colorado State Championships where she won her weight class and qualified for the Youth National Championships in her first meet.
Taylor joined CrossFit 719 and shortly after coach Mychael convinced her to dial back the CrossFit and of her potential in weightlifting. Shortly after committing to weightlifting, Taylor competed in her first meet (Colorado State Championships) were she took 2nd in her weight class. Afterwards, Laura took Taylor under her wing. Taylor competed in FRCF Spring meet as a last chance qualifier. Taylor improved her total by 24 kilos to qualify for Youth National Championships.
Youth Nationals was held in Grand Rapids, MI and with coach Maria just graduating college and taking a new job in Montana this was the first national meet coach Mychael was coaching alone. With the original schedule there was no issue but after the final technical meeting the schedule had changed to where both Brookelynn and Taylor were competing in the same session on opposite platforms. Coach Mychael reached out to all of the Colorado barbell clubs that were at the meet but unfortunately all of them had already planned return flights saturday night. Coach Maria and Blake Ford still came through for us making a connection with Butte Barbell Club who was kind enough to send a coach to help us out.
Prior to Youth Nationals Brookelynn broke her pinky in a basketball game and had to get surgery. She was able recovery fully and had a good training cycle prior to the meet improving her total by 10 kilos and winning her session. Taylor had less than a month to prepare for Youth Nationals after the FRCF meet and some things that lead to some inconsistencies in her training. She was still able to PR her snatch and was just 3k off her best total.
We are very proud of Brookelynn and Taylor and expect great things from them in the future!
