Common Faults: Not Pulling Under

Maria.JPG

In weightlifting there is no rule that states the lifter must receive the bar in a squat, but when watching a competition you will notice that most will receive their snatches and cleans in a squat because it will allow the greatest weight to be lifted. If the lifter lacks the ability, or chooses not to pull under the bar, they will be limited in the weight they will be able to lift. Assuming the lifter is capable of performing a proper squat, it's likely that they do not feel confident (strong/balanced/consistent) in that position. It's often not best to force the receiving of the snatch and/or clean in the squat. The bar should instead be received in the lowest position the lifter feels comfortable, with the same standards as the full lift (same pull/footwork/direction of hips).
